CHAPTER 20

PAYTON

I woke up to the strange feeling of a pressure change against my eardrums. My eyes flew open, and it was only then that I remembered where I was. As my heartrate returned to normal, I released a deep breath and focused on orientating myself.

I glanced down, frowning when I noticed that I was covered by a blanket I definitely didn’t remember putting over myself. It had to have been Karson. Or the flight attendant, perhaps. Since I didn’t know if he was responsible, I didn’t thank him but I did feel incredibly well rested.

Stretching my arms out above my head, I smiled and turned to him. “Are we there yet?”

A smile touched the corners of his lips, and he nodded, bending over slightly to point out the window beside me. “Next stop, Paris.”

I breathed in, and his familiar, clean, masculine scent drifted to me. “How do you smell so good after a flight?”

He pulled back to look at me with a hint of laughter behind his eyes. “Is that your way of telling me I smell good without just saying it?”

“No. I’m genuinely curious.”

Turning his head, his face was only inches away from mine when he laughed and I caught a hint of minty, fresh breath. “I went to brush my teeth and freshen up when they said we’d be landing soon. Since it’ll be late afternoon when we get to the city and you’re all caught up on sleep, I figured you’d want to get started.”

“You could’ve woken me up to do the same,” I complained, then held my breath when I realized it probably smelled horrible.

Karson laughed, not even bothering to hide it this time. “Don’t worry, Pay-Pay. You’re always gorgeous to me. You do have morning breath, though.”

Humiliated horror washed over me, but when he saw it, he only laughed harder before settling back in his seat. “Relax. There will be time to have a shower once we’ve checked in to our hotel. God knows, I need to have one, too.”

Before I could respond, the fasten-seatbelt sign came on again with a quiet ding, and both Karson and I turned to the window again. At my first glimpse of the Eiffel Tower, my heart skipped a few beats. “We’re really here, huh?”

I felt more than saw him nod. “Yeah, we are. It’s pretty surreal to be seeing all these places, don’t you think?”

“Absolutely.”

Both of our gazes remained glued to the city below as we continued our descent. Once we’d landed, we quickly gathered our things and were the first to reach the exit door just as it opened. Like before, when we’d arrived in Rome, I was immediately overwhelmed by the new sights, sounds, and scents that greeted us even when we were just leaving the plane.

Karson and I didn’t talk much as we collected our baggage and headed out, both of us too flabbergasted by the reality of being in France. Rapid-fire French was being spoken all around, and the bitter scent of freshly brewed coffee as well as something sweet wafted in the air.
